FSCC softball team create holiday messages for the military

The FSCC Softball team began preparing for the upcoming holiday season by sending words of encouragement to deployed members of the military.

The team members created signs with messages of “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Holidays,” and “Thank You” all aimed at showing appreciation for the service of our soldiers. During lunch and home basketball games, members of the FSCC community were invited to write their own messages of thanks and well wishes or simply add their signature to a banner. The amount of community support was overwhelming.

The team mailed six signs, covered in signatures, that will be distributed to a variety of locations and branches of service by the A Million Thanks Organization (www.AMillionThanks.org).

Hound Softball Wraps Up Home Games

On Tuesday, April 19th, the Lady Greyhounds faced off against Neosho County CC in a battle of conference opponents. The first game gave the fans a pitcher’s dual as both did a good job of keeping hitters off base and from scoring runs. Fort Scott was able to get a first inning run after Courtney Borland walked and then stole second base. Cassie Sharon then followed with an RBI double. Neosho was able to then get out of the inning. They did some scoring of their own in the third inning when an error and some base hits led to two runs for them. Sharon was able to come back from that inning and keep batters from scoring for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, after that first inning run, the Hounds weren’t able to get any more offense going and lost by a score of 2-1. Sharon led the way offensively as well for FSCC going 2-3 from the plate.

Game two saw more offense from both teams. After Neosho scored a run in the top of the first, Fort Scott got 3 of their own off of RBI singles from Alix Price and Allison Cates. The Hounds defense faltered in the third inning though as they committed two errors and gave up 5 runs. Neosho was also able to tack three more on in the 5th and two in the seventh. Offensively, Fort Scott continued to battle as they scored in both the third, fifth, and sixth innings. They were only able to score one running each inning though and fell to Neosho 11-6. Sharon again started the game, and Sam Oxford came on in the 6th to finish it. Offensively, Cates led the team with a 3-4 performance and 3 runs scored. Sharon again had a good game at the plate going 2-4 with a double and solo homerun.

The Lady Greyhounds faced Cloud County Community College on Wednesday, April 20th, in a make up game from a rainout in March. It was also Sophomore Day in which the team honored the 12 sophomores on the team this year.

The game resumed in the bottom of the 4th tied at 3-3 with two on and no out and Ariel Sanders up to bat. After a fly ball to right field moved Allison Cates up to third, Megan Feldman followed with an RBI single to right field. The defense was able to get out of the rest of the inning, and Cloud was able to score two in the top of the fifth off of an RBI single. The Cloud pitcher was able to shut the bats down over the final three innings not allowing another runner on base. Courtney Borland was 4-4 for in the game with 2 runs scored in the losing effort.

The Hounds started off slowly in the second game not scoring until the 4th inning, but when they did, they poured it on. They had the bases loaded with no outs after some good at bats and quick base running. Alix Price got the scoring going when she was hit by a pitch that forced in a run. Cates and Hannah Milton followed with RBI singles to finish the scoring for the inning at 5 runs.

Cloud kept their bats going in the second game as well scoring 3 runs in the 2nd and 5th and two in the 6th. A defensive miscue led to runs in the 2nd and 6th. Despite their best efforts, after the 5th inning, FSCC was unable to bring any more runs across and lost the game 8-5. Cates was 2-3 with an RBI and run scored and Sharon was 2-4 with a run scored.

Although disappointing to lose their last home game, especially on Sophomore Day, the sophomores showed tenacity and toughness to battle the whole way through. They look forward to playing at Cottey this coming Tuesday and then showing a strong performance in Regional playoffs the following weekend.

Softball Games Against Hesston And Hutch

This past Friday the Lady Greyhound softball team traveled to Hesston, KS to take on the Hesston Larks in a region double header. Game one saw Cassie Sharon (SO, Diamond, MO) give up only one unearned run over seven innings. Unfortunately for the Hounds, they were not able to give her any run support although they were able to get runners on base in 5 out of the 7 innings. Game two saw a better output of offense from the team as their bats started to come alive for pitcher Sam Oxford (FR, Big Cabin, OK). They had 12 hits over 7 innings and scored 5 runs. Oxford went 5 of the 7 innings giving up only 2 runs. Sharon relieved her in the 6th, and despite giving up 2 runs in the 6th to let the Larks ahead 4-3 shut them down in the 7th after the Lady Hounds scored two to go up 5-4 in the top of the 7th and earned the win. Offensively for the day, sophomore short stop, Sarah Donnell (Collins, MO), was 3-6 with a run scored and Cassie Sharon was 3 for 7 with 2 RBI.

On Saturday, the Greyhounds faced off against the HutchinsonCC Dragons in KJCCC action. Cassie Sharon was again on the mound for the firstgame and held the Dragons scoreless for 5 innings. She also gave the Houndstheir only run for the game when she hit a solo homerun to lead off the 4thinning. Defensively in the 6th, the Hounds lost some of theiraggressiveness in the 6th inning which led to 4 runs for Hutch, twoof them unearned. Their bats weren’t able to get anything going in the 7thand they lost 4-1. Kathleen Tyler (FR, Sweet Springs, MO) started the secondgame for the Hounds and benefited from 2 runs of support that her teammateswere able to give her in the top of the first. Unfortunately, one of Hutch’stop players was able to connect on one of her pitches in the bottom of thefirst and give the Dragons a 3-2 lead on a homerun. The Hounds were able to goup again in the top of the third, capitalizing on a couple of errors by Hutch, but Hutch went up again by a score of 7-4 in the bottom of the third, a leadthey would not relinquish although Fort Scott fought to the finish. BothBrianna Mark (FR, Topeka, KS), and Cassie Sharon came on in relief for Tyler. Down12-5 in the 5th inning, and with base runners threatening to score, the Hounds defense held strong, allowing them to play more innings and not getrun ruled. Again in the 6th, they held with bases loaded to givethemselves one more chance. Off of 6 straight hits in the top of the 7th,they were able to raise the score to 12-8, but that was as far as they wereable to get. Sharon was 4-7 on the day with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored, andAllison Cates (SO, Tahlequah, OK) was 2-5 with an RBI.

For all of her hardwork over the weekend Cassie Sharon, who had batted .500 with 4 RBI, earned ashare of Conference Player of the Week for the KJCCC.

Lady Greyhounds v Coffeyville on 5/2/10

The Lady Greyhounds battled with Coffeyville Community College for the chance to go to Wichita and continue on in the Region 6 tournament. The teams split earlier this year, and the Hounds knew they were going to have a tough opponent in the excited Ravens. Coffeyville took a 2-0 lead in the second and each team scored one in the third. The Ravens got to pitcher Cassie Sharon in the fifth and scored 3 more runs off of four straight hits. Sharon helped her own cause in the bottom of the fifth with a three run home run to right center. However, Coffeyville added one in the sixth off of reliever Brittny Washington and the Hounds were unable to get anything else going against pitcher Jakey Dobbs. Alix Price went 2-3 with a run scored in the 7-4 loss.  Game two was a pitcher’s duel as neither team scored until the fourth inning. Megan Barrager started the scoring by hitting an infield single which was then thrown away by the short stop allowing her to advance all the way to third. Alix Price kept her hot bat from the first game and brought Barrager around on a single to center. In the sixth, Coffeyville led off with a double and then scored on an error. Washington was able to hold off the other batters though and the teams were tied going into the seventh. The Ravens started off with a single to right field followed by a sacrifice bunt to move her over to second. The next batter got out, but a wild throw to third allowed the runner to score. Stormy Perkins pitched the last two innings for the Ravens and was able to get all six batters that she faced ensuring her team’s trip to Wichita. For the game, Courtney Borland was 2-3 and Washington threw all seven innings giving up six hits and the two runs, both unearned.
