Hound Rodeo Shows Well at Colby

FSCC’s Rodeo Team made a very respectable showing at the first college rodeo of the season, held in Colby, KS, September 16-18.  Colby’s brisk morning  temperatures and wind didn’t prove too distracting.  Overall the Men’s Team won 2nd place.  Eight rough stock riders earned points, including freshman Jade Blackwell, who won a go round in the Saddle Bronc Riding and freshman Blaine Kaufman, who won a go round in Bareback Riding at their first college rodeo.  Sophomore Yance Day won the Bareback Riding average.  The second college rodeo of the season will take place this weekend, Sept. 30-Oct. 2 in Pratt, KS.  Coach Jeff Sawyer is recovering from the accident that left him with 2 broken (now pinned) arms.  At rough stock practice, a bull tried to hook his horse and in the process of his horse getting out of the way, Coach was bucked off, breaking both arms and dislocating his right wrist.  He is glad to be back at practice now, in spite of a few limitations. Bareback rider Matt Croom had an incident seriously injuring his neck, after which his doctor told him he will be choosing a new career.  Bull rider Colton Hoggatt broke his humerus and dislocated his shoulder last Wednesday at practice, taking him out of competition for a while.  Also, the annual Alumni Rodeo is scheduled for Saturday, October 22.  Keep an eye on the FSCC Website for entry information and performance times.

College National Finals Rodeo Results

Fort Scott Community College’s Men’s Rodeo Team travelled to Casper, Wyoming, June 12-18 to compete at the College National Finals Rodeo.

Six individuals from FSCC’s Men’s Rodeo Team qualified for the CNFR and to represent the ‘Hounds. These six student-athletes are: Jordan Corrigan, Jake Self, Ethan Assman, Jake McKellips, Matt Croom, and Dustin Olmstead.

The CNFR is an annual event and usually hosts 400 cowboys and cowgirls from over 100 universities and colleges. FSCC finished second in the Central Plains Region, which qualified the team for the CNFR. This is the first time since 2008 that FSCC has sent an entire team to the CNFR.

Jordan Corrigan competed in the saddle bronc-riding event. In the first round Jordan’s horse ran into the fence but Jordan was still able to complete the eight-second ride. His third round horse fell into the fence and took Jordan with him, for which he was awarded a re-ride.

FSCC had three individuals participate in the bareback riding event. In round one Jake Self finished fifth, Matt Croom finished tenth and Ethan Assman finished 14th.
In the second round Jake Self finished fifth and Matt Croom finished 15th. Ethan Assman broke his hand while riding in the second round. In the third round Jake Self finished 12th and Matt Croom finished 22nd. Ethan still rode in the third round even though his hand was broken. After the short round in the bareback riding Jake Self placed fifth in the nation, Matt Croom placed 17th, and Ethan Assman placed 30th in the nation, broken hand and all.

The other two members of the FSCC team competed in the bull-riding event. In round one Dustin Olmstead finished fifth. In round two Jake McKellips finished fourth. After the short round Jake McKellips finished eighth and Dustin Olmstead finished 12th in the nation.

“The six students performed in such a professional manner on a national stage. FSCC and the Fort Scott community can be very proud of them,” said FSCC head rodeo coach, Chad Cross. “Two of these young men will return to FSCC next year. The other four will on to four-year schools to finish their degrees.”

FSCC Rodeo Team Qualifies For Finals

The Fort Scott Community College Rodeo Team has a lot to celebrate. After finishing runner-up in the Central Plains Region the team automatically qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo. Going to the CNFR is a huge accomplishment and it took a lot of hard work and determination from the team. The CNFR will start June 12-18 in Casper, Wyoming. FSCC will take six males for the qualifying team. The student athletes who are eligible for the CNFR this year include: Matt Croom, barebackriding; Dustin Olmstead, bull riding; Jake McKellips, bull riding; Ethan Assmann, bareback riding; Jordan Corrigan, saddlebronc riding; and Jake Self, bareback riding.

According to Chad Cross, FSCC head rodeo coach, most participants in the CNFR are college juniors and seniors, so for five sophomores and one freshman to qualify is remarkable. This is the first time since 2008 that FSCC has sent an entire team to the CNFR. “These are good kids that work hard,” said Cross. “These six individuals qualified for nationals this year, but there are 60 reasons they accomplished this. Those 60 reasons are their 60 teammates.”

All participants will compete in three rounds. When the participants compete, it will be on a clean slate. The previous rodeos the students competed at through the year will have no bearing on the CNFR. Over 400 cowboys and cowgirls from over 100 universities and colleges compete in Casper each year. Cross says, “the finalists competing are the elite from the nation. In the Central Plains Region, getting qualified by itself is a huge accomplishment.”

Jake McKellips attributes many factors to the team’s success. “Our teammates have really helped and supported us all and of course this never could have been possible without the support of the Fort Scott community.”

Jordan Corrigan who came to FSCC on the recommendation of a former FSCC student said, “Our main goal was to win the region. Even though we didn’t reach that goal, by placing second we put ourselves in a position to win a national championship.”

All six students were very thankful for the communities support especially to Andy Eck, Ted Osman, and Bo Casper. These individuals are products of the FSCC Rodeo program and have been very helpful week to week with the team’s training.

The students are also excited about the upcoming rodeo, “The Clash” which will pit current FSCC Rodeo Team members against FSCC Alumni Professionally Ranked Cowboys and Cowgirls. That event is scheduled for May 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Arnold Arena. Proceeds will go towards the new Rodeo Office Building.
