Men's Basketball Add Players For 2011-2012 Season

Fort Scott Men’s Basketball head coach Michael Cook is happy to announce the addition of eight prep players and two transfers. “All eight high school players and the two transfers that we signed during the signing period will give us added depth and improve us athletically. I am excited about the opportunity to work with each player that we signed and watching each player grow with the players that are returning.” stated Coach Cook

Below is a list of the players that signed with the Greyhounds and a brief synopsis from Coach Cook:

Hunter Pittman –Pretty Prairie, KS SG another shooter that is a little bigger which will allow him to play the small forward also, has great form with his shot and spots up well in transition.

Derrick Green- Kansas City Schlagle- SG an athlete that can play at least three positions, great perimeter defender and can score

Torrell Nickerson - Topeka West- SF- works hard on both ends of the court, good rebounder who can score in a variety of ways and can play great defense.

Austin Danner - Shawnee Mission North- PG/SG has the ability to play point and shooting guard, can get his shot off quick and finishes at the rim well.

Dominique Ray – Tecumseh –Shawnee- Heights- PG/SG -has great ball handling skills and sees the floor well, has great length for a point guard and is a throw back player that likes to pass first.

Dominique Washington – Kansas City Hogan Prep- SF -6’6 forward that can post up and step out shoot the three point shot, good ball handling skills and played on team that was state champions in class 3A in Missouri

Robert Thompson - Kansas City Don Bosco Educational School- PG/SG – guard with great speed and can score in a variety of ways. Can penetrate well and finishes well with both hands.

Austin Bass - Olpe , Kansas- F- hard worker that knows the game well, works hard and will have to adjust to the speed of the college game.

Transfer players:

Darren Givhan – Olathe, KS PG/SG played one year at Johnson County during the 2008-2009 season in which Johnson County won Division II Junior College National Championship - provides depth at the PG position and is a tough on ball defensive player, that knows how to push the ball and distribute the ball well.

Dallas Driver - Andover. KS SG redshirted at Oklahoma Christian University last year – fits perfect well into the offensive scheme, bring some experience at the shooting guard position.

Brian Brown - Oklahoma City, OK- SF played at Seminole State College last year-averaged 10 point per game and five rebounds per game while shooting 80% from the free throw line and 57% from the field and 35% from the three point line

Basketball Camp: June 6-10

Fort Scott Community College's Men’s Basketball team will be hosting a summer camp for grades 4-8, June 6-10. Daily instruction and stations will emphasize fundamental basketball skills and overall player development. Campers will compete on teams in order to apply their individual skill development to a team concept.

All members of the Fort Scott Community College basketball staff will be present during the camp along with some former and current Fort Scott Community College players. The cost of the camp is $75 and all campers will be provided a camp T-shirt.

The Ticket 99.1 ESPN Radio announces FSCC hoops broadcast slate

PITTSBURG, Kan. – KSEK-FM Radio – The Ticket 99.1 ESPN Radio – will broadcast selected Fort Scott Community College men’s and women’s basketball games during the 2010-11 season.

A total of 11 doubleheaders, including all nine played at Arnold Arena with the Greyhounds hosting foes from the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference’s Eastern Division, will be broadcast this season.  

Road doubleheaders at Labette and Neosho County are also included on the broadcast schedule.

The Ticket is in its first season of broadcasting FSCC Greyhounds athletics. Besides its football and basketball efforts, The Ticket also plans on broadcasting selected baseball and softball games in the 2011 season. Matt Newbery will call all of the action, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to the scheduled tip-off of the first game.

The season’s opening broadcast will be Dec. 4, when the Johnson County Cavaliers invade Arnold for the only division home doubleheader before the holiday break. The schedule resumes Jan. 5 when the Greyhounds go to Labette.

The Greyhound women are under the direction of second-year head coach Diana Couch. She led Fort Scott to a 14-18 record and a berth in the Region VI quarterfinals in her first season.

Michael Cook is entering his fourth season as the men’s coach at FSCC. The Greyhounds will be trying to improve on the 4-27 record posted during the2009-10 campaign under the guidance of the former Pittsburg State guard.

Greyhound Men’s Basketball Team 1st in Conference

The Fort Scott Community College Men’s Basketball team finished first in the KJCCC in team GPA for the spring of 2010.

Also, Travis Buck, Nathaniel Ward, Alex Barner and Ramell Taylor were named All Conference Academic Selections. Ramell Taylor also met the national requirements for Academic All American.

“These accomplishments show how committed the young men were on and off the court,” said head coach Michael Cook. “All of the young men on the team know how much we value and stress academics in our program, but not just our program the entire Greyhound Athletic Department. While student- athletes may receive the honors and accolades, we also want to thank the faculty and staff for all of the hard work and dedication that they give to our students.”

Greyhound Men’s Basketball Staff Complete

Carlos Perez, James Williams and Keenan Curry have joined the Fort Scott Community College men's basketball staff as assistant coaches, head coach Michael Cook has announced. Perez brings seven years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, Williams joins the Greyhound family after coaching last season at Washburn University, and Curry will serve as a student assistant.

Carlos Perez
Perez will join the Greyhound coaching staff after spending two seasons as an assistant basketball coach for Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX. While at Sul Ross State Perez recruited the freshman of the year for the American Southwest Conference West Division in 2007-2008 and helped lead the team to the conference team sportsmanship award.
Prior to Sul Ross State, Perez served three seasons as the Men’s Basketball Coach at Kenedy ISD in Kenedy, TX, where he helped lead the Lions to its first winning season in 2005 after ten losing seasons. During those three years, Kenedy won 43 games, advanced to Bi- District finals in 2005, and was Co- District Champs in 2006.

James Williams
Williams joins the Greyhound coaching staff after spending the last two years as the graduate assistant at Washburn University. Williams also played collegiate basketball in the Jayhawk Conference at Cloud County Community College.
Keenan Curry
Curry joins the Greyhound staff as student assistant, Curry played two years at Fort Scott Community College. Curry is currently finishing his education at Pittsburg State University.

"I am extremely excited about the coaching additions program. All three of these coaches will work extremely hard to help continue to build this program. I am also grateful for all of the hard work that Jaunc Bradshaw did while he was here; Coach Bradshaw helped set the standard for what is expected of assistant basketball coaches at Fort Scott. “

Ramell Taylor signs with Southern Utah University

Ramell Taylor, a Sophomore from Detroit, MI has signed to play basketball next year with Coach Roger Reid at University of Southern Utah in Cedar City, UT.

Ramell lead the Greyhounds this year in scoring and rebounds averaging 17 and 7 respectively. Ramell also was ranked 5th in the conference in scoring and 9th in rebounds, and earned a second team all conference selection this year.

Coach Michael Cook says, “I am very happy for Ramell, all of the hard work that he has put in is paying off for him. It is every player’s dream to play Division 1 basketball and Ramell has achieved that dream.”

While Ramell is an outstanding athlete, the thing that most people don’t know is that Ramell is also an outstanding student earning a cumulative G.P.A of 3.63 and he was voted Homecoming King for 2009.

Coach Cook states, “I believe that Southern Utah is a great fit for Ramell and I am very honored and proud to have been his coach for two years.”
