Two former FSCC football players to play in Super Bowl XLVI

Just three short years ago two Fort Scott Community College (FSCC) teammates were enjoying an incredible run playing Saturdays at Frary Field in Fort Scott, Kansas, helping to qualify the Greyhounds for their third straight bowl game. Now Pro-Bowler Jason Pierre-Paul and NFL Rookie Jacquian Williams find themselves headed to Super Bowl XLVI.

While at FSCC Pierre-Paul and Williams made a huge impact on the up and coming football program. Starting in 2006 FSCC’s football program began a turn around from a team that had not won a single game two years, to a record of 38-10 over the next four seasons. Williams was apart of that success in 2007 and 2008 and Pierre-Paul joined him for the 2008 season. From humble beginnings at FSCC, a place where the football team sometimes shares facilities with the rodeo team, to now preparing to play on the largest sports stage in the world, these two players rise has been tremendous.

It is no surprise to Greyhound fans or coaches that Pierre-Paul and Williams have reached this kind of success.

"To be able to come to Fort Scott away from your family and the environment that you are used to living in and be able to become All-American Football players as well as college graduates was the beginning for Jacquian and Jason,” said former FSCC head coach Jeff Sims. “They know the sky is the limit for them both athletically and academically. I wouldn't put limitations on those two men once they set their sites on something. They are battle tested and will come out on top in whatever they choose to pursue."

During Williams’ time at FSCC he received First Team All-American, First Team All-Conference, and KJCCC Player of the Week honors in 2008. Pierre-Paul in just one season earned Second Team All-American, First Team All-Conference, and KJCCC Player of the Week honors.

Both players graduated from FSCC in the spring of 2009 and signed to play at the University of South Florida. The two would once again find themselves teammates when the New York Giants drafted Jacquian Williams in the sixth round in 2011. Pierre-Paul had been drafted just one-year prior with the Giants first-round pick, going 15th overall in the 2010 NFL draft.

In just his first year, Williams had to step up and play when the Giants were plagued with injuries. He took advantage of the opportunity and worked relentlessly to better himself as a player. Williams certainly surprised a few people in his rookie year and continued to thrill audiences during the NFC Championship game. In overtime, Williams stripped the ball on a punt return, which helped the Giants get great field position that lead to the game winning field goal.

Pierre-Paul has also been outstanding in this, his second year in the NFL. He made his first Pro Bowl team and finished the regular season fourth in sacks with 16.5.

Super Bowl XLVI will be about more than parties, commercials, and football for Greyhound fans. This year’s game will be about two former FSCC players, being proud of what they have accomplished and remembering where they started.

NJCAA Football Hall of Fame Releases Inductees of 2011 Class

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Football Coaches Association is pleased to announce four newcomers to its Hall of Fame. The 2011 inductee class includes two former players that went on to stardom in the National Football League and Arena Football League as well as the NJCAA’s 1972 National Championship team and its head coach. Fort Scott Community College (Kan.) alum Eddie Brown, who excelled for nine years in the Arena Football League, and NFL record holder and North Iowa Area Community College alum MarTay Jenkins highlight the 2011 class. Along with the two former players, longtime Arizona Western College head coach Ray Butcher and his 1972 AWC Matadors national title team completes this year’s class of inductees. Eddie Brown Player; Fort Scott Community College, Kan. (1987-88) Brown, a native of Miami, Fla., was an All-Conference performer and NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American in 1988 at Fort Scott. In his two seasons with the Greyhounds he recorded 67 receptions for 1,375 yards and 16 touchdowns. After Fort Scott, Brown excelled at Louisiana Tech where he emerged as one of the best playmakers in the NCAA. During his junior season he ranked 17th nationally with 11.8 yards per return. For his two seasons with the Bulldogs, he recorded 76 receptions for 1,126 yards and nine touchdowns. He also recorded 25 kickoff returns for 504 yards and one touchdown, 28 punt returns for 398 yards and one touchdown and six carries for 60 yards and one touchdown. Brown then moved on to the Arena Football League, joining the Albany Firebirds in 1994. He would play 10 seasons with the Firebirds, including their move to Indiana, until retiring in 2003. During his tenure in the AFL he became the league’s most prolific player. He currently is the AFL’s all-time leader in receiving touchdowns (303), career receptions (949) and career receiving yards (12,726) and ranked second in scoring (2,070). He was twice named the AFL MVP (1996, 1999) and helped lead the Firebirds to the 1999 and 2001 Arena Bowl. In celebration of the AFL’s 20th season in 2006, Brown was voted by league executives, coaches and media as the greatest player in the league’s history. Brown was No. 1 on the top 20 players in the history of the AFL….some 10 spots in front of now NFL legendary quarterback Kurt Warner. In August of 2011, Brown was named as an Inductee into the AFL Hall of Fame. He will be part of formal ceremony during the 2012 AFL Kickoff Weekend. After an assistant coaching stint at Fort Scott till 2010, Brown is now in his first season as the head football coach at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kan. His son, Antonio Brown, is currently a wide receiver with the Pittsburgh Steelers. MarTay Jenkins Player, North Iowa Area Community College (1993-94) Jenkins, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, was a two-time All-Region 11 performer for North Iowa Area Community College in the mid-1990’s. He was a key player on the Trojans’ RC Cola Bowl team in ’93, catching a 74-yard touchdown pass in a 43-20 win over Harper (Ill.). Jenkins then transferred to NCAA DII Nebraska-Omaha and sat out a season due to injury before recording 102 receptions for 2,268 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns during two seasons with the Mavericks. His talents landed him a spot in the high profile Blue vs. Grey All-Star Game, despite the fact the event is billed as a showcase of Division I players. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys but was released during training camp only to be picked up by the Arizona Cardinals. Jenkins would play four seasons with Arizona and made a name for himself in the NFL as a kick-return specialist. In December of 2000, Jenkins set two NFL records in a 44-10 Cardinals loss to Jacksonville. He broke the record for kickoff returns in a season (82) and kickoff return yards in a season (2,186). In 2001 he caught 32 passes for 518 yards and three touchdowns in addition to racking up 1,120 yards in kickoff returns. After brief stints in the AFL and Canadian Football League, Jenkins founded Stand Out Sports, which is an athletic training company in Arizona. Ray Butcher Head Coach, Arizona Western College Butcher spent nearly 40 years as a member of Arizona Western College. He was the head football coach of the Matador program for nine seasons and served two other seasons as an assistant before taking over as athletic director from his retirement in football in 1986 until 2000. During his coaching tenure at AWC, Butcher led the Matadors to five consecutive bowl game appearances (1968-72), two of which came in the NJCAA Football Championship Game. While he led at least two of his football teams to the top of the NJCAA Football Poll during the regular season, the 1972 campaign was his finest. The Matadors went through the regular season without a loss behind a defense that allowed less than 12 points a game. An 11-0 season was capped off with a resounding 36-8 victory over Fort Scott CC (Kan.) in the 1972 El Toro Bowl and the program’s only national championship. Butcher was named the 1972 NJCAA Football Coach of the Year and also earned Arizona Junior College Coach of the Year honors. From 1968-72 Butcher led the Matadors to a 45-5 record. He finished his AWC coaching career with an overall record of 61-25. He also served as the president of the Western States Football League for nine seasons. After the 1972 season, Butcher departed AWC to become the offensive coordinator at Utah State University and spent three years with the Aggies. He returned to the two-year college ranks as head coach at the College of the Desert in California, winning a pair of Desert Conference titles over a six year stretch. Overall, Butcher posted a 91-53 mark as a head coach in two-year college football.

FSCC Head Football Coach Resigns; Offensive Coordinator To Head Up Program

Fort Scott Community College head football coach Jeff Sims has resigned his position at FSCC in order to accept a position as head of recruiting at the University of Indiana. Sims has been in Fort Scott for the last four seasons. In that time he lead his teams to three consecutive 9+ win seasons and three consecutive bowl games, including an appearance in the NJCAA Championship game in 2009.

The Greyhounds won 29 games in Sims' first three seasons and were the only team in the nation to go undefeated in the regular season in 2009. Also in 2009, Sims' took the KJCCC Coach of the Year honors when the greyhounds had their first bid for a national title since 1973. Prior to FSCC, coach Sims coachedfootball at Southern Arkansas State, Minnesota State, Mesabi Range Community College, Mount San Antonio College, and Central Missouri State. Sims' is a 1995 graduate from Baker University.

“I'm very proud to have been the head football coach at Fort Scott Community College,” said Jeff Sims. “I appreciate all the hard work the former Greyhounds, the currentGreyhounds and everyone on campus did to help us be successful each season. I will always appreciate what Fort Scott did for me as they helped me achieve my dream of becoming a Division I football coach.”

Current Offensive Coordinator Curtis Horton will become the new head football coach at FSCC.

“Coach Horton is a great coach, father, and friend,” said Sims. “No one is better to lead these men. I know Fort Scott Community College will be the best community college to get an education and play football, for many years to come, with Coach Horton in charge.”

Horton has been with the Greyhounds since 2007 when he joined Sims' staff. Horton's teams have been amongst the top offenses in the KJCCC and the nation while Horton has been calling plays for the Greyhounds. In 2009 his offense averaged 300 yards of total offense per game, 28 points per game and became the#1 ranked offense in the KJCCC.

Horton will transition into his new role as head coach immediately. The Greyhounds begin their first season under Coach Horton on August 25th when they will host Blinn College at Frary Field.

“First, I would like to say that our program is extremely proud and excited for Coach Sims,” said Coach Horton. “He has done an amazing job while at FSCC and will be a great representative of Fort Scott.”

“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to lead my own program. I am also pleased that I have this opportunity at a school and in a community with which I am very familiar.”

FSCC assistant to play Arena Football in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-- Fort Scott Community College assistant coach Aaron Hosack was one of 10 player signings announced Wednesday by the Kansas City Command of the Arena Football League.
Hosack, who works with the Greyhounds wide receivers and is the squad's passing game coordinator, is wrapping up his second season at FSCC.

The Ontario, Calif., native played wide receiver under current Fort Scott coach Jeff Sims for two seasons at Mount San Antonio (Calif.) College before wrapping up his college career at the University of Minnesota. He had 80 receptions for 1463 yards and 11 touchdowns in two campaigns with the Golden Gophers.

Hosack was a free agent signee of the Minnesota Vikings and spent a year on their practice squad. He went on to play three springs in NFL Europa for the Frankfort Galaxy, and won a championship ring in World Bowl XIV (2006). During his time with the Galaxy, he had 70 catches for 1,129 yards and 14 touchdowns.

After a brief stint with the New Orleans Saints, Hosack spent the 2008 season with the AFL’s Colorado Crush -- where he had 37 receptions and 10 touchdowns.

The Command will begin play in the AFL at the Sprint Center starting in mid-March 2011 – the franchise was known as the Kansas City Brigade from 2006-08 before the original league disbanded prior to the 2009 season and the team suspended operations.
