The following courses in Allied Health are offered at FSCC:

CPR is a two-day (weekend) class held from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on both days. It is a one credit hour course. This course is a co-requisite for both the First Responder and EMT-B courses. This is a course for: American Heart Association – Healthcare Provider Certification. If a student is currently certified, the course is used for purpose of review of necessary skill levels, therefore will remain a co-requisite with or without current certification. This course is offered on campus, in Paola, and in Pittsburg locations.

FIRST RESPONDER is a 4 credit hour course, which meets on two evenings each week with one Saturday session (together with the EMT-B class) for the extrication portion of the course. Classes are scheduled for Monday and Friday evenings, 6:30 pm. to 10 pm. The CPR co-requisite applies as in the EMT-B course. There is no clinical / field training required for this course. Our First Responder course is taught in the Paola location during the Fall semester and on the FSCC campus in the Spring.

EMT-B meets on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. This class also has three Saturday sessions, which meet 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. In addition to these hours, 48 hours are required in clinical and field training. The clinical / field training consists of: 24 hours spent in at least two different hospital Emergency Rooms (12 hours in each) with 24 hours ride-along time in at least two different EMS services (12 hours with each).

EMT-B is a 10 credit hour course. This course is scheduled at our Paola, Kan., location during Spring semesters and at the FSCC campus location during the Fall semesters.

EMS BRIDGE First Responder To EMT-B is the newest course here at FSCC. It targets currently certified First Responders who want to “move up” to the EMT-B level of certification. This six credit hour course requires: current First Responder and CPR certifications before entering the class. It reviews topics and skills learned as First Responders and covers additional information and skills to allow the student to gain the knowledge and skills necessary for EMT-B certification. The only session of this course scheduled at this time will be taught for the Pittsburg Fire Department, in Pittsburg, Kan. We plan to make this course available for other students in the Fall of 2003.

EMT-INTERMEDIATE will be the next addition to our courses in the EMS department. This eight credit hour course will include: 105 clock hours of lecture / lab, with 72 clock hours of clinical training required. The course will require the student to be currently certified as an EMT-B in the state of Kansas and hold a current CPR certification at the Health Care Provider level with demonstration of skills for the current standards.
